Moving with pleasure
As a sport & exercise teacher, I teach at VMBO and here at Global College. This is a very nice combination, because the students are very different. Sport is a way of developing yourself. In my lessons, it is not important that you can kick a ball well, or that you can jump over a cupboard. Sport is a tool to develop skills that, for example, can contribute to your social growth.
In my lessons, you are allowed to make mistakes! You learn and grow from this. So don’t think you have to be good at something right away, we take small steps. The most important thing is that you find a safe place at school, where you can be yourself. I get a lot of happiness from the gratitude of the pupils. It is very special to see how quickly everyone learns.
After a short time, some pupils can speak Dutch so well, or have found their niche, which is really nice to see!

I really enjoy teaching students Dutch and to experience that they succeed! It’s not just about pure vocabulary, but the whole package of speaking, reading, writing.

The nicest thing I have experienced at school
A lot of fun things happen. The snow walk was delightful, some students had never seen snow before! Or the smoothies we made from the fruit we brought. Baking pancakes in class on National Pancake Day. Every day is fun because I see everyone enjoying and developing so much.
Special
A specific special memory I have of a Hungarian girl. We had many conversations together about her life in the Netherlands and in Hungary; about her dreams and dilemmas. Eventually she chose to return to Hungary without her parents. On her last day, she played a very beautiful piece of music on the piano especially for me: that was very special.

My passion for education
It never ceases to amaze me every day how many impressions I gain: the amount of cultures, nationalities, languages and unexpected twists and situations. And all without setting foot outside the country’s borders. The pupils learn a lot from each other. I am therefore proud to be a linchpin in this process. As a teacher, I am therefore lucky to see results of all efforts very quickly. It continues to amaze me how quickly pupils pick up the Dutch language.

show up, make contact. You will very soon find that others are also interested in you.

I have experienced many wonderful moments, but each time I am struck by the gratitude and enthusiasm. I will always cherish and encourage that.

My passion for education…
consists mainly of seeking (and hopefully finding) a personal connection with the student. This can be a commonality, but certainly also something we just don’t have in common. By opening myself up to the student and sharing something of my personal life, a student feels seen and heard.
As a teacher, I find it important
Not to take myself too seriously in front of the class. I think self-mockery is a great thing and I think it is good for pupils to see and hear that teachers too are just people with doubts and insecurities. In my experience, this contributes to more relaxed contact between them.
My best tip to feel at home quickly at our school is …
participating in joint activities. That way you get to know colleagues better and, above all, in a completely different and more personal way.
The nicest thing I’ve experienced at school…
are EOA pupils spontaneously telling me what I should definitely go see/do/taste in their country of origin when I go there!

My passion for education
Reading and spelling are the things I enjoy teaching the most. I find it extremely important that all students can read well after attending the EOA. After all, when you read, a world opens up for you. Reading also gives you the opportunity to take a break and completely shut yourself off from the outside world. Being able to read well is also very important for further education and your future.
As a teacher, it is important to me…
That students feel that they are welcome and safe in the Netherlands. The EOA is often the first school in the Netherlands where they will be taught. The EOA is therefore very special for many students. You come to live in a foreign country, you hear a foreign language all day, you meet strange people and you have to deal with strange customs and habits. At the EOA, another new start is made. It is so wonderful that as an EOA teacher I can do a lot for these students and help them feel at home in another country.
My best tip for feeling at home quickly at our school is….
Try to make friends quickly at school. Talk a lot with students and teachers at school. Participate in the activities at Pit-Stop.
Special
I like it best when I can teach students something. Former students regularly come back to the EOA to tell me which school they are at now. Or they come years later and proudly show me their diploma from an advanced program.
Global College is for me…
The best and nicest school in the Netherlands!!!! I have worked at many schools in my years as a teacher. EOA is the school where I feel most at home. The school where I can mean the most to the students. Global College is just my school!

I went into education because I would like to help young people find their place in society and acquire the knowledge needed to do so. This is especially important with EOA students, because they come from a different country, with a different language and with different customs and habits.
As a teacher, I find important
Moving to another country is a big change. I therefore find it important that students feel comfortable and that there is a good atmosphere in the classroom. Only when you feel comfortable can you really get down to learning something new.
Learning the language is not the goal, but a means to be able to talk to other children from your sports club, for example, and make friends. A means to be able to do that education you want so badly. It is a means to start feeling at home in the Netherlands.
Special
It is great to see how pupils develop in a year: I have had pupils who hardly dared or could not speak a word of Dutch at the beginning of the year and always started in English. By the end of the school year, they automatically started talking to me in Dutch and could have whole conversations.
Proud
hat else I find so special about the EOA students is their spontaneity and gratitude. For example, a mentor class once totally surprised me when they planned a party in the classroom for my birthday, complete with cake, garlands and flowers. Or students you see again after a year and who happily come running up to you for a handshake or even a hug. All this is what makes it so nice to work at the EOA.
